Does iCloud Work in China?
Yes, iCloud works in China without a VPN, on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. Reddit users in China say iCloud Mail, iCloud Drive, iCloud Photos and backups keep working, including on Apple Accounts registered outside China. The iCloud website is sometimes disrupted, and iCloud Private Relay switches off in mainland China, because Apple doesn't offer it there.
Before you fly
- Leave your Apple Account's country or region as it is. GCBD's terms say that switching it to China mainland starts moving your iCloud data from Apple to GCBD, the company that runs iCloud there.
- Forward Gmail to your iCloud address if you use Gmail, which doesn't work on Chinese networks. Set it up at home.
- Limit how much eSIM data iCloud uses. In Settings > Cellular, turn off cellular data for Photos, or turn on Low Data Mode. Apple says Low Data Mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks when you aren't on Wi-Fi.
- Don't count on Private Relay. Apple turns it off in mainland China. For blocked apps and sites, set up a roaming eSIM or a VPN and test it at home.
Is iCloud blocked in China?
No. iCloud isn’t blocked in mainland China, though its website is sometimes disrupted. GreatFire Analyzer, which tests websites from mainland China, answers “Sometimes” for www.icloud.com. Its latest test, on October 18, 2026, found the site reachable. GreatFire also answers “Sometimes” for icloud.com without the www, and says the firewall breaks that address’s TLS handshake. It rates the whole icloud.com domain as mixed.
People who live in China say iCloud works. In a December 2025 thread on r/shanghai, one Reddit user wrote that you can use iCloud without a VPN if your Apple Account is registered outside China. Another wrote that Google Drive and personal OneDrive are blocked, but iCloud is “not yet”. A third disagreed, saying international OneDrive and iCloud need a VPN to sync.
Because most recent reports say iCloud works, we list it as working. Google’s equivalents don’t work without a roaming eSIM or a VPN: see Google Docs, Drive and Meet in China and Gmail in China.
Does iCloud email work in China?
Yes. Reddit users in China say iCloud Mail works without a VPN. In a March 2026 r/travelchina thread about which email services work in China, one user wrote that iCloud email works without a VPN in the Mail app, but wasn’t sure about the website. Another wrote that iCloud.com and Microsoft email work on the Chinese internet, in apps and on the web. GreatFire answers “Yes” for iCloud Mail’s web address, www.icloud.com/mail. Its latest test was on October 19, 2026.
Gmail doesn’t work on Chinese networks. Airalo, which sells eSIMs, lists Gmail among the Google services that are generally inaccessible on local networks. A user in the same thread suggested forwarding Gmail to your iCloud address, because iCloud email works normally in China and Gmail doesn’t. Set up forwarding before you fly: see Gmail in China. For another address that works, see Outlook in China.
Does iCloud sync work in China?
Yes. Reddit users in China say backups, iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos work:
- Backups: In June 2026, a user with a UK Apple Account, who used to live in China and now spends about 10 weeks a year there, wrote on r/chinalife that iCloud backup works fine. They never noticed any lag, because it mainly worked in the background.
- iCloud Drive: In an October 2025 r/chinalife thread on cloud drives that work in China, users named iCloud Drive. One wrote that Apple iCloud works fine there, while Google Drive needs a VPN.
- iCloud Photos: In March 2026, a user on r/chinalife suggested iCloud Photos, iCloud and Apple Calendar to someone moving to China who wanted to replace Google’s apps without relying on a VPN.
Apple says the time iCloud Photos takes to upload your library depends on its size and your internet speed. You can pause uploads for one day, though Apple says pause might not be available, depending on your library’s status. In iOS 26 or later, open Photos, tap Collections, tap the profile button, then tap Pause.
iCloud in China mainland is operated by GCBD
iCloud for Apple Accounts set to China mainland is operated by GCBD, not by Apple. An account from another country stays with Apple.
Apple says iCloud in China mainland is operated by GCBD (AIPO Cloud (Guizhou) Technology Co. Ltd), to comply with Chinese regulations. The data you store in it, including photos, videos, documents and backups, falls under GCBD’s terms and conditions. Apple’s FAQ from January 2018 said iCloud in China would move to GCBD on February 28, 2018, and that the change covered iCloud for Apple IDs with China in their country or region setting. It described GCBD as a Chinese internet services company.
What matters is your Apple Account’s country or region setting. Apple says that if you aren’t a Chinese citizen residing in China mainland, you can edit that setting “to reflect your current country or region” and keep using iCloud under Apple’s own terms. GCBD’s terms, last revised September 14, 2026, say that changing your account’s country or region to China mainland starts moving your iCloud data from Apple to GCBD. Changing it back moves the data to Apple, and GCBD then deletes its copy.
Don’t switch your main account to China mainland to get Chinese apps. Reddit users in China suggest a second Apple Account set to China, used only in the App Store, so your iCloud stays where it is.
Does iCloud Private Relay work in China?
No. Apple doesn’t offer iCloud Private Relay in mainland China, so it switches off while you’re there. Private Relay is part of iCloud+. Apple says it protects your privacy when you browse in Safari, so that no single party can see both who you are and which sites you visit.
Apple’s feature availability list for iOS and iPadOS 27 includes China mainland for iCloud+ and Hide My Email, but not for Private Relay. Hong Kong and Macao are on the Private Relay list. Apple says that when you travel somewhere Private Relay isn’t available, it turns off automatically and notifies you. It turns on again when you re-enter a country or region that supports it. GCBD’s terms for China mainland accounts list Hide My Email and HomeKit Secure Video as iCloud+ features, and don’t mention Private Relay.
Apple first said so in June 2021. When it announced Private Relay, an Apple spokesperson told CNBC that the feature would not work in China. CNBC noted that using unauthorized VPNs is illegal in China, and that Private Relay, while not technically a VPN, acts in a similar way.
Private Relay isn’t what gets travelers past the firewall. In an April 2025 r/travelchina thread, a traveler who could open blocked sites on mobile data with Airalo and Trip.com eSIMs first credited Private Relay. Other users replied that roaming data isn’t filtered, and the traveler agreed. The sites were blocked again as soon as they joined Wi-Fi.
With a roaming eSIM or VPN
You don’t need either for iCloud, but you do for blocked services such as Gmail and Google Drive. An eSIM that routes your data abroad carries it to a gateway outside mainland China before it reaches the internet. Airalo says blocked sites then open without a VPN, as long as you use the eSIM’s data rather than hotel Wi-Fi. A VPN does the same on any connection. See eSIM or VPN for China, VPNs that work in China and Is using a VPN legal in China?
Watch your data on an eSIM plan. In an August 2026 r/travelchina thread from a traveler who found 10 GB wasn’t enough for 12 days in China, one user suggested turning off cellular data for iCloud backup and Photos, because uploads to iCloud use a lot of data. Apple says you can turn off cellular data for any app in Settings > Cellular, and that Low Data Mode pauses automatic updates and background tasks when you aren’t on Wi-Fi.
We couldn’t confirm whether Private Relay turns on when a roaming eSIM routes your data outside China.
