Unreliable in mainland China

Does Asana Work in China?

Asana usually works in China, but it isn't reliable on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. Asana's community moderator said in April 2026 that it generally works from mainland China, though performance can vary a lot by region, internet provider and time of day. GreatFire also recorded interference with Asana's main website in July and August 2026. Get the app at home, and bring a roaming eSIM that sends your data abroad, or a VPN, as a fallback.

Before you fly

  • Get the Asana app before you leave. The iPhone app is in Apple's China App Store, but Android users in mainland China told Asana's forum in 2020 that they couldn't reach Google Play to download it.
  • Pack a second way online. A forum leader who visits Dalian found Asana normal on a pocket Wi-Fi rented in Japan, on a Japanese phone add-on and on hotel Wi-Fi, though the hotel Wi-Fi itself was very unstable.
  • Set up a VPN and test it before you leave. Asana staff suggested a VPN to users in China in 2017 and 2020.

Is Asana blocked in China?

No, Asana isn’t blocked in China, but its main address has had bouts of interference. GreatFire, a group that measures censorship from inside mainland China, answers “Sometimes” for asana.com, based on checks up to October 18, 2026. It recorded interference on some of its checks between July 5 and August 30, 2026, and every check since then has connected.

The web app’s address has a cleaner record. app.asana.com, where Asana’s login and project pages live, answered “Yes” on October 11, 2026. That verdict replaced a partly disrupted one after GreatFire began discounting outright refusals, which have turned up since late August 2026 on routes showing no other trouble. Counted that way, it has recorded no interference there since 2016. A project page on the app also answered “Yes”, on October 15, 2026. GreatFire’s summary for the whole asana.com domain still reads mixed.

Users have described slow spells for years. In 2018, a customer in China wrote on Asana’s forum that the service had gradually degraded and that Amazon’s CloudFront network, which Asana used to deliver its app, appeared to be blocked. Asana’s current list of hostnames still includes a CloudFront address, alongside its own domains and file storage on Amazon S3. With GreatFire’s “Sometimes” for the main website and Asana’s own warning about speed, we list Asana as unreliable, though it isn’t blocked.

Asana in China: what Asana says

Asana’s community moderator says it generally works from mainland China, though speed varies. Asked on the Asana Forum at the end of April 2026, the moderator replied: “I’ve seen a few teams access Asana from mainland China and it generally works, but performance can vary a lot by region, ISP, and time of day.” The moderator added that everyday features, such as creating tasks, commenting and checking My Tasks, are usable, while heavier pages and large-file actions can feel slower.

Asana staff have pointed to VPNs before. In 2017, a staff member wrote on the forum that users in China may have trouble reaching cloud services in general, and that companies with staff there often use VPNs, SSH tunnels or proxy servers. In 2020, another staff member said most users in mainland China probably relied on a VPN to download and access Asana. A user replied that their team in mainland China used Asana without a VPN, though data was sometimes slow to load at first.

China isn’t among the places Asana’s export rules exclude. Its trade compliance page says export controls and sanctions stop it serving people and companies in Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria and the Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine.

Asana doesn’t offer data storage in China. Its data residency table lists Virginia (the default), Frankfurt, Tokyo and Sydney, each with a backup region, and data stays in the United States unless a customer opts in to another region.

The Asana app in China

Apple’s China App Store lists Asana’s iPhone app, but Android users have had trouble getting it. In 2020, Android users in mainland China asked on Asana’s forum for another way to install it, because they couldn’t reach Google Play. Asana staff said they couldn’t send the app by email and suggested contacting support. Whether Android users still face this in 2026 is not confirmed.

How to use Asana in China

Speed is the main risk with Asana in China, so arrange a fallback connection before you go. Our comparison of eSIMs and VPNs for China explains which one fits your trip.

Roaming data and travel eSIMs

A regular visitor found Asana normal on every connection they tried. A forum leader on the Asana Forum travels from Japan to Dalian about four times a year, for a week at a time. In May 2026, they wrote that Asana in the browser and the phone app worked much as it does in Japan. They had three ways online. One was a mobile Wi-Fi device rented at a Japanese airport, on a plan that allows Facebook access. Another was an overseas add-on for their Japanese phone that also works on Wi-Fi. The third was free hotel Wi-Fi, which they said only some hotels offer and which was very unstable. Facebook is one of the services the UK government says China blocks permanently.

Holafly, which sells eSIMs, includes a VPN with its China eSIM at no extra cost, and says you can share 1 GB a day from it as a Wi-Fi hotspot. Compare plans, and how each one routes data, on our eSIM page.

Asana over a VPN

Pick a VPN that still connects in China, and be ready to switch services. In June 2026, ABC News quoted a Hong Kong resident who regularly travels to mainland China and had moved to a new VPN that still worked. “It’s becoming more difficult finding stable VPNs,” he said. Check which VPNs still connect in China before you buy one.

The same ABC report notes that state-approved VPNs, which are relatively easy for authorities to monitor, are still permitted. Britain’s travel advice says VPNs, like other online products and services, need a license from the Chinese government under its cybersecurity laws. Our guide to the legal side of using a VPN in China sets out what that means in practice.

Chinese alternatives to Asana

Chinese work tools cover the same ground as Asana:

  • Teambition: TechCrunch’s report on Alibaba’s 2019 purchase called it a platform for co-workers to plan and collaborate on projects, similar to Trello and Asana.
  • Worktile: a 2025 sspai roundup, with products supplied by vendors, calls it one of the best-known project management tools in China.
  • Feishu (飞书): the same roundup says it runs on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and Linux as well as the web, and includes OKR goal tracking.

What people in China use instead

TeambitionAlibaba's project collaboration app. TechCrunch named Huawei, Xiaomi, TCL and McDonald's as customers in 2019.
WorktileProjects, tasks, goals, a cloud drive and team chat in one app, per its China App Store listing.
FeishuByteDance's work platform (飞书), with chat, video meetings, cloud docs, a knowledge base, a calendar and approvals, per its App Store listing.

Does Asana work in China without a VPN?

Usually. Asana's community moderator said in April 2026 that teams in mainland China can generally use it, though speed varies by region, internet provider and time of day. GreatFire found Asana's web app loading normally in October 2026, but it answers "Sometimes" for Asana's main website after interference in July and August.

Is Asana available in China?

Yes. China isn't on Asana's list of embargoed places, and the Asana iPhone app is in Apple's China App Store. Asana doesn't store data in China, though: the regions in its data residency table are in the US, Germany, Japan and Australia.

Does the Asana app work in China?

On iPhone, you can download it from Apple's China App Store. A forum leader who visits Dalian from Japan said in May 2026 that the phone app and the browser version both worked normally on every connection they used there. Android users in mainland China said in 2020 that they couldn't reach Google Play to get the app, so install it before you travel.

What do teams in China use instead of Asana?

Chinese options include Alibaba's Teambition, Worktile and ByteDance's Feishu. TechCrunch's report on Alibaba's 2019 purchase of Teambition put it in the same market as Trello and Asana.
