Yes, Bell roaming works in China. Roam Better costs C$16 a day there, and the Asia Travel Pass C$75 (14 days) or C$90 (30 days), plus tax. Each one uses your plan's data and includes unlimited calls and texts in China and to Canada. Since May 1, 2026, Bell has no pay-per-use data roaming, so without one of them, or a plan that includes China, your phone gets no mobile data there. Bell doesn't explain how roaming data is routed, which leaves WhatsApp and Google access unconfirmed. One Bell user on Reddit wrote in May 2026 that their work phone needed no VPN on cell data.
- Roam Better is C$16 a day in China before tax. Bell bills no more than 20 days per line in a billing period, so the daily fees top out at C$320.
- A 14-day Asia Travel Pass costs C$75 and a 30-day one C$90. It starts the moment you add it, and its 26 destinations include Hong Kong, Macau and Japan. For a trip of five days or more, the 14-day pass is cheaper than Roam Better.
- Bell dropped pay-per-use data roaming on May 1, 2026. With no add-on, calls in China cost C$2.50 a minute, sent texts C$0.99, and there's no data.
- After 5 GB in a day, Roam Better slows to up to 512 Kbps. Bell's Ultra plan with international roaming includes China; Bell's Ontario page lists it at C$110 a month before credits.
- Bell doesn't say whether WhatsApp and Google work on its roaming. A Bell user wrote on Reddit in May 2026 that their work phone needed no VPN on cell data. Bell hasn't confirmed it.
- An unlimited eSIM for ten days is C$50.00 on Airalo or C$52 on Holafly, while Bell charges C$75 for the 14-day Asia pass or C$160 for ten days of Roam Better.
Bell roaming charges in China
Bell roaming in China costs C$16 a day with Roam Better or C$75 for 14 days with the Asia Travel Pass, plus tax. Rates are from the China result on Bell’s coverage map, Oct 25, 2026.
| Bell add-on | Price | Data | Calls and texts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roam Better | C$16 a day | Your plan’s data, slower after 5 GB a day | Unlimited in China and to Canada |
| Asia Travel Pass | C$75 for 14 days, C$90 for 30 | Your plan’s data | Unlimited in China and to Canada |
| International Travel Pass | C$100 for 14 days, C$120 for 30 | Your plan’s data | Unlimited in China and to Canada |
| Nothing added | Pay-per-use | Not available | C$2.50 a minute, C$0.99 per text sent |
- What starts a Roam Better day: Bell’s FAQ lists making or answering a call, sending a text, using Apple Live Voicemail and any data, background refresh included. Receiving a text isn’t on the list.
- Eastern Time: a Bell day ends at 11:59 p.m. ET, which is 11:59 a.m. in China, or 12:59 p.m. from November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027.
- 20-day limit: Bell bills at most 20 international Roam Better days per line per billing period, so C$320 at most.
- After 5 GB: speeds drop to up to 512 Kbps until midnight ET, or you can buy 1 GB more at higher speed for C$8. The China listing shows no daily cap for the passes.
- Who can get it: most monthly plans, but not corporate accounts or plans that already include roaming. Bell prepaid phones can’t roam.
How Bell’s Asia Travel Pass works
Bell’s Asia Travel Pass starts the moment you add it and ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on its last day, so Bell says to add it on the day your trip starts, before you land. No Roam Better fee applies while it runs. Both versions cover 26 destinations: besides mainland China, the list includes Hong Kong, Macau, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, India and several Gulf states. There’s no 7-day Asia pass, but five days of Roam Better (C$80) already cost more than the 14-day pass.
Bell plans that include roaming in China
Bell’s Ultra plan with international roaming includes China with no daily fee: calls, texts and data in Canada and 83 other countries and territories, Hong Kong included but not Macau. Roaming data runs at full speed for 5 GB a day, then up to 512 Kbps. Bell’s Ontario plans page listed it at C$110 a month before credits on Oct 25, 2026. Most of your usage must be in Canada.
How to turn on Bell Mobility roaming in China
- Before you go, text ROAM to 8000 or use MyBell to add Roam Better, which stays on your account for later trips. For a pass, text ASIA14 or ASIA30 to 4400 on the day you leave.
- Switch on data roaming. Bell’s steps are Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Enable Data Roaming for an iPhone, and Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Network > Roaming for Android.
- Bell’s welcome text on arrival confirms whether Roam Better is on your account. 5G and VoLTE roaming depend on your phone.
Does Bell work in China without a VPN?
Not confirmed: Bell’s roaming pages say nothing about routing or about blocked apps such as WhatsApp and Gmail. Two outside sources touch on the question:
- BGR’s July 2026 explainer says roaming traffic runs through the local network and back to the carrier’s home territory, which is how roaming phones reach Facebook and YouTube. It doesn’t mention Bell.
- On May 29, 2026, in an r/telus thread about China, a commenter whose Bell work phone is on “the 60+ country plan” wrote “No need for a vpn” on cell data; ads and maps treated the phone as if it were in Toronto. The comment gives no travel dates.
Neither comes from Bell, so have a fallback: WhatsApp in China and Gmail in China list other ways in.
VPN for Wi-Fi in China
Roaming does nothing for hotel and café Wi-Fi in China. BGR notes that the Great Firewall filters local Wi-Fi, so blocked apps need a VPN there, and warns that a VPN can be hard to get working, and keep working, in China. Get one working at home first. Canada’s China travel advice, updated October 14, 2026, warns that communications may be monitored. To decide between a VPN and an eSIM, read eSIM or VPN for China; hotel setups are in VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.
Bell roaming vs eSIM: what 10 days in China costs
Over 10 days, an unlimited travel eSIM costs about C$25 less than Bell’s 14-day Asia pass and over C$100 less than Roam Better. Prices below: one traveller, Canadian dollars, each company’s site on Oct 25, 2026, with Bell’s before tax.
| Choice | China data | 10 days |
|---|---|---|
| Bell Roam Better | Your plan’s data, 5 GB a day at full speed | C$160 |
| Bell Asia Travel Pass, 14 days | Your plan’s data | C$75 |
| Airalo | Unlimited, 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day | C$50.00 |
| Holafly | Unlimited | C$52 |
- 7 days: Roam Better comes to C$112 and the Asia pass C$75, against C$38.50 on Airalo and C$38 on Holafly.
- Your number: both eSIM plans are data only, so keep the Bell line on for sign-in codes. With its data roaming off, and no calls or texts made or answered on it, no Roam Better day starts. More in 2FA and SMS codes in China.

FAQ
Does Bell roaming work in China?
Yes. Bell's coverage map lists China for Roam Better and for both its Asia and International Travel Passes. Its partners there are China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, with data roaming on all three.
How much are Bell roaming charges in China?
Roam Better is C$16 a day, billed for at most 20 days per line in a billing period. Bell's Asia pass is C$75 for two weeks or C$90 for 30 days. Without either, calls cost C$2.50 a minute and sent texts C$0.99, with no data. Taxes are extra. Prices checked Oct 25, 2026.
Is there a Bell China roaming pass?
Yes. Bell's Asia Travel Pass covers China for 14 days at C$75 or 30 days at C$90. Besides China, it works in 25 places such as Hong Kong, Macau, Japan and Taiwan. It starts as soon as you add it, so add it on the day you leave. Text ASIA14 or ASIA30 to 4400, or use MyBell.
Does Bell work in China without a VPN?
Not confirmed. None of Bell's roaming pages covers how data is routed. A Bell user wrote "No need for a vpn" on Reddit in May 2026, about their work phone on cell data in China. That is one report, not a statement from Bell. On a Chinese hotel or café network, plan on a VPN for blocked apps.
Can I use Bell Mobility in China without Roam Better?
Only for calls and texts, unless you have a Travel Pass or a plan that includes China. You pay C$2.50 a minute for calls and C$0.99 per text sent, and texts you receive are free. Bell ended pay-per-use data roaming on May 1, 2026, so mobile data won't work.
Will I get text codes on my Bell number in China?
Yes, while the Bell line is on and connected to a partner network. Bell says incoming texts are free at pay-per-use rates, and receiving a text isn't one of the actions that start a Roam Better day. If a travel eSIM handles your data, keep data roaming off on the Bell line.
