Blocked in mainland China

Does Reddit Work in China?

No, Reddit doesn't work in China on Chinese mobile data or Wi-Fi: it has been blocked there since August 2018, so the website and app won't load. It usually works on home roaming or a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. Otherwise, use a VPN that you install and test before you fly.

Before you fly

  • Install Reddit and log in at home. The Reddit app isn't in Apple's China App Store. Reddit sometimes blocks logged-out visitors who arrive through a VPN and asks them to log in.
  • Set up a travel eSIM or home roaming. Pick an eSIM that routes data outside mainland China and install it before you leave. Provider websites are likely blocked once you're in China.
  • Install and test a VPN for Wi-Fi. A roaming eSIM doesn't help on hotel Wi-Fi. Travel China Now says VPN sites and app stores are blocked from inside China.
  • Save the threads you need. Travel China Now says saved posts in the Reddit app still need a connection to load. Keep screenshots or PDFs of anything important.

Is Reddit blocked in China?

Yes. Reddit is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. A July 2026 guide for Australian tourists in the Bega District News lists Reddit among the services China has completely blocked, along with Google, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, X and Telegram. MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, also lists Reddit as blocked in a guide updated in September 2026.

The website and the app both fail. Travel China Now, a China travel guide site, said in June 2026 that Reddit won’t connect on Chinese networks: no subreddits, no posts and no messages. It adds that even posts you saved in the app need a connection to load. GreatFire, which tests websites from mainland China, found www.reddit.com blocked in its latest test, on October 18, 2026.

Download Reddit before you go. Its iPhone app isn’t in Apple’s China App Store, and MyChinaGuide says Google Play isn’t available in China.

When Reddit was banned in China

China blocked Reddit in August 2018. Quartz reported on August 13 that users in China had found the site and app not working over the weekend, and that the trouble appeared to start on Friday, August 10. Access was patchy at first. Of the people Quartz asked, those in Shanghai and Hunan could still load Reddit, while others in Shenzhen and Beijing couldn’t. Quartz noted that Reddit had been periodically out of reach from mainland China before.

The China Project reported on August 12 that it was unclear what triggered the block. Neither report cites an official statement, and we found none.

The block stuck. When Tencent, one of China’s largest technology companies, led a $300 million funding round in Reddit in February 2019, The Register noted that Reddit was inaccessible in China, and Fortune called it blocked. Travel China Now says Reddit has stayed blocked since 2018.

Is Reddit illegal in China?

Reddit is blocked in China, and we found no official statement about the block or about using Reddit. The block is technical: China’s firewall stops Reddit loading on Chinese networks.

The UK government’s travel advice addresses how you get around blocks and what you post. It says China’s cybersecurity laws require online products and services, such as VPNs, to be licensed by the Chinese government. It also says that posting, publishing or supporting political statements critical of China or the Chinese authorities could be viewed as illegal, and that online activity outside mainland China could fall under mainland law. Our guide Is using a VPN legal in China? covers what the VPN rules mean for visitors.

Dr Marina Zhang of the University of Technology Sydney told the Bega District News in July 2026 that routine surveillance of private tourist conversations is unlikely. She said enforcement is more likely to focus on higher-risk groups or sensitive activities, such as journalism, activism and political organising. This page isn’t legal advice.

How to use Reddit in China

To use Reddit in China, set up a workaround before you fly: a roaming eSIM or home roaming that routes your data outside mainland China, a VPN, or both. MyChinaGuide suggests using an eSIM for everything on your phone and keeping a VPN for laptops. Our guide eSIM or VPN for China? explains how to choose.

On a roaming eSIM or home roaming

A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China gets around the block. Airalo, which sells eSIMs, says every package of its that covers China, including its Regional Asia and Global eSIMs, sends your traffic through gateways outside mainland China, so you don’t need a VPN. Travel China Now says Reddit typically loads normally on a roaming SIM or travel eSIM, with no VPN needed. MyChinaGuide calls a roaming eSIM the more dependable fix for a phone in 2026.

Not every eSIM works this way. Salil Kanhere, a cybersecurity expert at UNSW, told the Bega District News that certain travel eSIMs can bypass mainland filtering by routing traffic through offshore gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. He said a local Chinese SIM or a China-specific eSIM typically remains subject to local filtering. Check how a plan routes data before you buy, and compare plans on our eSIM page.

Roaming on your home SIM can work the same way. Kanhere says roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some apps that are usually blocked might still work. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.

Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. MyChinaGuide says hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi puts you back on Chinese infrastructure, which filters blocked sites like any local connection.

On speed, the sources we found give claims, not measurements. Airalo says roaming data stays stable, while VPNs can slow your connection. A Holafly user wrote on r/travelchina in September 2026 that their eSIM data went out through Singapore, which added latency for Chinese apps such as WeChat and Alipay. We found no independent test that compares eSIM and VPN speeds in China.

Buy and install the eSIM at home. Kanhere says provider websites are likely blocked once you’re inside China, and MyChinaGuide says you can’t reliably install a new eSIM profile once you’re there.

Reddit with a VPN in China

A VPN also gets you past the block, and it’s the option for hotel Wi-Fi and laptops, where a roaming eSIM doesn’t help. Travel China Now says a VPN restores full Reddit access.

VPNs have become less reliable. MyChinaGuide says they have been noticeably unreliable since a crackdown in April 2026, and calls a VPN on its own “a fragile bet in 2026”. Eric Liu, a US-based censorship analyst, told ABC News in June 2026 that telecom carriers in parts of China had been asked to block all VPN services. A VPN user in China told ABC News that Instagram videos sometimes load really slowly, and that she switches server locations when one stops working. Check which VPN works in China now for the latest reports, and compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page.

Reddit sometimes blocks VPN and proxy traffic itself. Skyhigh Security, a web security company, said in a support article updated in June 2026 that Reddit’s bot and scraper detection had flagged its proxy addresses. The block page it quotes reads “You’ve been blocked by network security. To continue, log in to your Reddit account or use your developer token”. AdGuard VPN, a VPN seller, reported in April 2024 that Reddit’s website turned away logged-out visitors on several popular VPNs but worked once they logged in. Log in to Reddit before you travel.

Install the VPN at home and test it. Travel China Now says VPN sites and app stores are blocked from inside China. See VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China for hotel networks.

Reddit in China: what Reddit users report

Reddit users in 2026 say Reddit works in China on a travel eSIM, home roaming or a VPN, and not on Wi-Fi without a VPN. These are individual reports, not tests.

  • Travel eSIM, April 2026. A traveler staying in Shanghai wrote on r/travelchina that their Airalo eSIM worked with WhatsApp, Reddit and Trip.com.
  • Just landed, May 2026. A traveler waiting for their bags at the airport wrote that Reddit, Instagram and TikTok all worked “like I’m back home”. One reply said that was because they were roaming, and others warned that the apps would stop working on Wi-Fi.
  • Travel eSIMs, September 2026. Asked how to keep using Reddit, Gmail and WhatsApp in China, several users recommended a travel eSIM instead of a VPN. One added that on Wi-Fi you lose access to apps from outside China.
  • VPN on hotel Wi-Fi, October 2026. A Google Pixel owner wrote that the phone’s built-in VPN let them use Reddit, Facebook and ChatGPT on hotel Wi-Fi, with their SIMs switched off.

Hong Kong and Macau

Reddit works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. Travel China Now says the firewall applies only to mainland China. Reddit’s iPhone app is in Apple’s Hong Kong App Store.

Chinese alternatives to Reddit

Travel China Now lists Baidu Tieba and Zhihu as the best alternatives in China. It calls Tieba entirely in Chinese and not practical for most visitors, and Zhihu more of a curiosity than a real replacement for travelers.

  • Baidu Tieba (百度贴吧): Baidu’s forum app. The magazine The World of Chinese says its forums, called bars, cover a wide range of topics, from gaming to exam prep. It launched in 2003 and once called itself the world’s largest Chinese online community. The magazine reported in 2023 that Tieba had lost 90 percent of its monthly users by 2021. Travel China Now says its topic communities are similar to subreddits.
  • Zhihu (知乎): TechCrunch says it began in 2011 as a question-and-answer site similar to Quora, and grew into a hub for professional knowledge. Its China App Store listing opens with “Where there are questions, there are answers” (our translation).
  • Douban (豆瓣): Its China App Store listing describes a culture and lifestyle community built around books, films and music, with groups that help you find people with shared interests (our translation).
  • Xiaohongshu (RedNote, 小红书): In a September 2026 r/chinalife thread, one user called it similar to Reddit, “where you can ask for advice”. Our Instagram page has more on it.
