Blocked in mainland China

Does Discord Work in China?

No, Discord doesn't work in China on Chinese mobile data or Wi-Fi, because it's blocked: your servers and messages don't load, and voice channels don't connect. It usually works on home roaming or a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. Otherwise, use a VPN that you install and test before you fly, with a voice call as well as text.

Before you fly

  • Install Discord and sign in at home. Discord's iPhone app isn't in Apple's China App Store, and MyChinaGuide says Discord's website is blocked in China.
  • Set up a travel eSIM or home roaming. Pick an eSIM that routes data outside mainland China and install it before you leave. Provider websites are likely blocked once you're in China.
  • Install and test a VPN, plus a backup. Join a voice channel over it at home, not just text chat. Discord's guide to voice errors says Discord only works on VPNs that have UDP.
  • Tell your Discord groups before you go. MyChinaGuide says your account just goes silent while you're behind the block, with no sign that you're away. Agree on a fallback for calls that matter.

Is Discord blocked in China?

Yes. Discord is blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi. MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, said in an article updated in September 2026 that Discord’s website, desktop app and mobile app all fail on Chinese networks. Gizmodo, in a June 2026 VPN guide with affiliate links, also says both the website and the app are blocked.

GreatFire, which tests websites from mainland China, answers “No” to whether discord.com opens there. It says the Great Firewall poisons the site’s DNS and silently drops its packets, so requests time out. It has found discord.com blocked in every conclusive test since March 27, 2021, most recently on October 18, 2026. GreatFire’s answer is also “No” for discord.gg, the domain of Discord’s server invite links.

The block dates from mid-2018. GreatFire’s records show discordapp.com reachable when it was first tested in December 2015, and blocked from July 13, 2018. VyprVPN, a VPN seller, reported in September 2018 that Discord users in China could no longer log on or connect with friends. We found no official Chinese statement explaining the block.

The block covers mainland China. Gizmodo says Discord works fully in Hong Kong, including voice and video calls, and Discord’s iPhone app is in Apple’s Hong Kong App Store.

What you see when Discord is blocked

The app doesn’t show a clear error. MyChinaGuide says it opens and shows cached content, then hangs on connecting. Messages don’t send or arrive, server lists don’t refresh, and joining a voice channel spins forever or drops at once. The desktop app sticks at its gray startup screen. Discord’s website doesn’t load either, so the browser version is no fallback.

Your account isn’t affected. MyChinaGuide says everything comes back once you’re on an uncensored connection. Until then, your account just goes silent, and the people in your servers get no sign that you’re away.

On a roaming eSIM or home roaming

A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China gets around the block. MyChinaGuide says international roaming data bypasses the Great Firewall, so Discord connects the moment you land. Airalo, an eSIM provider, says every package of its that covers China, including its Regional Asia and Global eSIMs, uses international data routing, so you don’t need a VPN. A Reddit user who needs Discord every day said in July 2026 that a Trip.com eSIM never failed on their trip, except in remote rural areas.

Not every eSIM works this way. Salil Kanhere, a cybersecurity expert at UNSW, told the Bega District News in July 2026 that certain travel eSIMs bypass mainland filtering by routing traffic through offshore gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. He said a local Chinese SIM or a China-specific eSIM typically remains subject to local filtering. Check how a plan routes data before you buy, and compare plans on our eSIM page.

Roaming on your home SIM can work the same way. The Bega District News says roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some apps that are usually blocked might still work. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.

Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. MyChinaGuide says that on hotel Wi-Fi you’re back behind the firewall. For stays longer than a week, it suggests an eSIM for messaging plus a VPN for heavy use on Wi-Fi.

Calls use more data than text. MyChinaGuide estimates that Discord voice uses roughly 30 to 50 MB an hour, and that video calls and screen sharing use hundreds of MB an hour.

Buy and install the eSIM before you go. Kanhere says provider websites are likely blocked once you’re inside China. See eSIM or VPN for China? for when each one makes sense.

Does Discord work in China with a VPN?

Yes, when the VPN gets through. MyChinaGuide says a VPN that works inside China restores Discord completely, including servers, messages, voice, video and screen sharing. The catch is that most consumer VPNs are blocked themselves, so it says you need a provider with obfuscated servers built for China. Gizmodo says free VPNs fail.

Reports from people in China are mixed. Some use Discord over a VPN all the time, while others say it sometimes fails, gets choppy or struggles with calls. The dated reports are below.

VPNs come under pressure in waves. MyChinaGuide says the pressure fluctuates, especially around big political dates, and suggests carrying a second VPN as a backup. The UK government says internet access in China can be limited around key political events and dates.

Install and test the VPN before you fly, with a voice call as well as text. MyChinaGuide says VPN provider sites are blocked in China and Chinese app stores don’t carry these apps. Compare the VPNs we track on our VPN page, and see VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China for hotel networks.

The legal side is a gray zone. The UK government says China’s cybersecurity laws require online products and services such as VPNs to be licensed by the Chinese government. MyChinaGuide says enforcement targets VPN sellers and platform operators, not travelers chatting with friends, but still calls it a legal gray zone. Read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.

Voice and video calls

Calls are the weak spot. MyChinaGuide says text and images over a working VPN feel no different from home, voice calls are “good, not great”, and video and screen sharing are “workable, temperamental”. It says one-on-one video calls generally hold at reduced quality, while group video with screen sharing is where things wobble.

Discord says it only works on VPNs that have UDP. Its guide to voice connection errors lists “ICE Checking”, “No Route”, “RTC Connecting” and “Connecting”, and says these generally mean something on your end, such as a firewall or a VPN, is interfering with the connection. If you get stuck on one of them, check that your VPN supports UDP.

Where the call connects matters too. MyChinaGuide suggests a VPN server in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore or Taiwan rather than the US or Europe, to keep the detour short. Discord picks the voice region of an empty voice channel based on the first person who joins, and of a DM call based on the person who starts it. Anyone with the Manage Channels permission can set a region with Region Override in the voice channel’s settings. Discord suggests a region midway between members when calls have trouble.

Discord in China: what Reddit users report

Reddit users in 2026 say Discord needs a travel eSIM or a VPN in China, and that calls cause more trouble than text.

  • Travel eSIM, July 2026. In r/chinatravel, a traveler who uses Discord daily said a Trip.com eSIM never failed, except in remote rural areas. Another replied that on Wi-Fi you still can’t reach anything without a VPN, and that Astrill was working while Mullvad wasn’t. A third said the firewall caught on to their Tailscale setup after a week and started blocking their devices from using it.
  • VPN, August 2026. In r/chinalife, one user said they use Discord all the time over a VPN made for China, and advised against VPNs that aren’t designed for the firewall. Another said that even with a VPN or Shadowsocks, it sometimes doesn’t work. A Surfshark user said it was slow and got choppy at times.
  • Desktop app, October 2026. An Astrill user on Windows 11 said Discord’s login had spun endlessly for over a year. One reply said turning off Astrill’s LSP setting had fixed the same problem for them.
  • Calls, April 2026. A gamer in China said two proxy services that ran YouTube and games smoothly still struggled with Discord calls.

Discord alternatives in China

KOOK is the closest thing to Discord in China. SlashGear says even its design and layout are similar, and that it works almost exactly like Discord, with voice, text and video chat. It calls KOOK the successor to an app called Kaiheila (开黑啦). KOOK calls itself “an easy-to-use voice communication tool” on its website (our translation). It runs on PC, Android, iOS and the web, with servers on topics such as games, music, reading and foreign languages. Its listing in Apple’s China App Store offers voice calls, text chat and bots made by fans.

QQ and WeChat cover the rest. MyChinaGuide says QQ, Tencent’s veteran chat platform, hosts enormous gaming groups, and WeChat groups handle everything else. WeChat’s China App Store listing offers group chats of up to 500 people and video chats with up to 15. For chatting with new local friends, MyChinaGuide says WeChat is the universal answer. See WeChat in China.

Expats on Reddit use the same apps. An expat League of Legends community in China said in March 2025 that it uses a KOOK server and WeChat groups because Discord is restricted there. A Reddit user said in February 2026 that they use KOOK and that it’s very similar to Discord. In a 2024 r/chinalife thread, people also said Chinese gamers often just call each other on WeChat, use voice apps such as YY and TT, or use the voice chat built into games such as League of Legends and Honor of Kings.

The Chinese apps take some setup. MyChinaGuide says KOOK, QQ and WeChat all work without a VPN but require some Chinese to navigate, and that you should expect real-name registration tied to a Chinese phone number for full features. See Chinese phone number for foreigners.

Downloading Discord in China

Install Discord before you travel. Its iPhone app, Discord - Talk, Play, Hang Out, isn’t in Apple’s China App Store, though Apple’s Hong Kong store has it. MyChinaGuide says Discord’s website is blocked in China and Chinese app stores don’t carry it. It suggests installing Discord, a tested VPN, a backup VPN and your eSIM before you leave.
