WeChat and QQ, Tencent’s two chat apps, work on Chinese networks without a VPN. Apple’s iMessage isn’t blocked either, travel guides say.
- WeChat: GreatFire, which tests websites from mainland China, lists WeChat’s site as not blocked. Shanghai’s government says you can use WeChat for messaging, voice or video calls, paying bills and many other everyday tasks.
- QQ: MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, says it works without a VPN but takes some Chinese to navigate.
- iMessage: Holafly, an eSIM seller, says it isn’t blocked but only works between Apple devices.
Messaging apps blocked in China
WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Discord and Facebook Messenger are blocked on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi:
- WhatsApp: since September 2017, when TechCrunch reported that messages, photos and videos had stopped working for many users.
- Telegram: since July 2015, after People’s Daily accused it of aiding human rights lawyers, Global Voices reported.
- Signal: listed by the Bega District News among services China has completely blocked.
- Discord: since 2018, MyChinaGuide says.
- Facebook Messenger: blocked along with Facebook. MyChinaGuide says you can’t send or receive messages or make calls.
Apple removed WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal from its China App Store in April 2024 on the orders of China’s internet regulator, MacRumors reported. Install them before you fly. The table above shows whether WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Facebook work on a roaming eSIM or a VPN.
Popular messaging apps in China
The messaging apps used in China are mainly WeChat and QQ. Tencent counted 1,439 million monthly active users of WeChat and Weixin combined at the end of June 2026, and 520 million monthly active users of QQ on mobile devices. Weixin is the version for accounts linked to mainland Chinese numbers, and its users can chat and call WeChat users, WeChat’s help center says. Holafly calls WeChat the most widely used chat app in China.
Texting in China: SMS, iMessage and FaceTime
Your phone’s regular texts work on roaming, and iMessage works between Apple devices, travel guides say.
- SMS. MyChinaGuide says plain SMS and phone calls work over roaming. Keep your home number active: UNSW cybersecurity expert Salil Kanhere told the Bega District News that many Western services won’t deliver codes to a Chinese number at all. See authenticator apps in China.
- iMessage. Holafly, MyChinaGuide and Notes from China, a travel blog with affiliate links, say it works. Holafly says texts to Android phones fall back to SMS.
- FaceTime. Holafly says FaceTime video calls work, but that Group FaceTime, FaceTime Audio and FaceTime links aren’t supported in mainland China. Apple says only that FaceTime, Group FaceTime and FaceTime audio may not be available in all countries or regions.
The UK government warns that during periods of tension, the authorities may block access to text messaging and international phone lines.
How to use WhatsApp, Telegram and Discord in China
To keep these apps working, set up a roaming eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, or a VPN, before you leave home. eSIM or VPN for China? explains how each one gets past the firewall.
Airalo, which sells eSIMs, says you can browse freely on its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs without setting up any additional software. Not every eSIM routes data abroad: Kanhere told the Bega District News that a China-specific eSIM typically remains subject to local filtering. He advised buying and installing a travel eSIM before you arrive, because provider websites are likely blocked once you’re in China. Compare plans on our eSIM page.
Notes from China says hotel and café Wi-Fi always uses a Chinese IP address, so you need a VPN there, and on laptops or tablets that can’t use your eSIM. A censorship analyst told ABC News in June 2026 that carriers in parts of China had been asked to block all VPN services. Set one up and try it before the trip, and check which VPN works in China now. The UK government says China’s cybersecurity laws require VPNs to be licensed by the Chinese government. Our guide Is a VPN legal in China? explains what that means for visitors.
Set up WeChat before you fly
Create your WeChat account at home, because AFAR says registering within China can be troublesome.
- Use your own number. Tencent’s guide for visitors says to download WeChat using your international phone number. WeChat says the number must be able to receive SMS, and that the code may come as an automated voice call.
- Line up a helper. WeChat may ask another WeChat user to scan a QR code to verify you. If no one can help, you can verify with a payment card or by activating WeChat Pay.
- Turn off your VPN. WeChat asks you to disconnect from any VPN while you register.
