Blocked in mainland China

Does Facebook Work in China?

No, Facebook doesn't work in China on Chinese mobile data or Wi-Fi: it has been blocked since July 2009, and Messenger is blocked too. You can still download the app from Apple's China App Store, but it won't load on a Chinese connection. It often works on home roaming, and on a travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as long as your phone stays off Wi-Fi. On hotel Wi-Fi, use a VPN that you install and test before you fly.

Before you fly

  • Buy and install a travel eSIM at home, or check your roaming. Pick an eSIM that routes data outside mainland China. Provider websites are likely blocked once you're in China.
  • Install and test a VPN at home. You'll need it on hotel Wi-Fi, where a roaming eSIM doesn't help. MyChinaGuide says VPN websites are blocked in China.
  • Check how your login codes will reach you. A UNSW cybersecurity expert suggests keeping your home number active for roaming, and installing an authenticator app before you go.
  • Install WeChat as a backup. MyChinaGuide says it works on Chinese networks with no VPN or eSIM, so you can still reach people if Facebook and Messenger won't connect.

How to use Facebook in China

To use Facebook in China, you need a connection that leaves mainland China before it reaches Facebook. There are two ways to get one: a travel eSIM or home roaming that routes your data abroad, and a VPN. Set them up before you fly. Our guide eSIM or VPN for China? explains how each one works.

On a travel eSIM or home roaming

A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China gets you onto Facebook without a VPN. Airalo, an eSIM seller, names Facebook among the services that are generally inaccessible on local networks, and says its China, Regional Asia and Global eSIMs route your traffic through gateways outside mainland China. Nomad, another seller, says its China eSIM gives you Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp without an external VPN. MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, recommends a roaming eSIM first, and says that once you turn on data roaming, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Google all just work.

Not every plan works this way. Salil Kanhere, a cybersecurity expert at UNSW, told the Bega District News in July 2026 that certain travel eSIMs bypass mainland filtering by routing traffic through offshore gateways such as Hong Kong, Singapore or Australia. A local Chinese SIM or a China-specific eSIM, he said, typically remains subject to local filtering. Check how a plan routes data before you buy, and compare providers on our eSIM page.

Home roaming can work the same way. Kanhere said roaming data is in many cases routed through your home carrier or an overseas gateway, so some apps that are usually blocked might still work. Travelers on Reddit say Facebook worked on T-Mobile and Vodafone roaming in 2026; see the reports below. Ask your carrier what roaming in China costs.

Either way, it only works on mobile data. Airalo says you have full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. MyChinaGuide says that on hotel or café Wi-Fi, your traffic routes back through Chinese infrastructure and the firewall applies again. Turn Wi-Fi off, or use a VPN while you’re on Wi-Fi.

With a VPN

A VPN works on any connection, so it’s the option for hotel Wi-Fi and laptops. MyChinaGuide says a VPN can still work, but that VPNs have become noticeably less dependable since a crackdown in April 2026, and that many services now drop out without warning. ABC News reported in June 2026 that telecom carriers in parts of China had been asked in April to block all VPN services, according to a censorship analyst.

Speed can suffer: Airalo, an eSIM seller, says VPNs can slow down your connection and drain your battery, and a VPN user in China told ABC News that Instagram videos sometimes load really slowly.

Install and test the VPN before you fly, because MyChinaGuide says VPN websites are blocked in China. See which VPN works in China now, our guide to VPNs for hotel Wi-Fi in China, and the VPNs we track on our VPN page. The UK government says China’s cybersecurity laws require online products and services such as VPNs to be licensed by the Chinese government, so read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.

Login codes

If Facebook asks for a code when you sign in from China, it has to reach you. Kanhere advised travelers to keep their home number active for roaming so one-time passcodes still arrive, and to install an authenticator app before they travel in case roaming SMS proves unreliable. See authenticator apps in China.

Is Facebook banned in China?

Yes. Facebook has been blocked in mainland China since July 2009, and it’s still blocked in 2026. The UK government’s travel advice lists Facebook among services that are permanently blocked in China, with Google, YouTube and X. GreatFire’s test page for www.facebook.com answers “No” to whether it opens from mainland China, as of its last test on October 1, 2026.

The block began during deadly ethnic riots in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang. TechCrunch reported on July 7, 2009 that Facebook appeared to be inaccessible from most parts of mainland China, and quoted a source who said friends in Hong Kong could still reach it. ABC News reported that users in China saw a “Network Timeout” error. On July 9, Bloomberg reported that Facebook couldn’t be reached from Beijing or Shanghai, after clashes that left more than 150 people dead. It noted that Twitter had already become inaccessible in the week before June 4.

At the time, China Digital Times quoted People’s Daily as saying that “Xinjiang independence” activists were using Facebook.

Meta acknowledges the block. Its annual report for 2025, filed in January 2026, says user access to Facebook “has been or is currently restricted in whole or in part” in China, Iran and North Korea. On a Chinese connection, MyChinaGuide says, the page times out, with an endless spinner and no error message.

Hong Kong and Macau are different: MyChinaGuide says both are outside the mainland Great Firewall. The Facebook and Messenger apps are listed in Apple’s Hong Kong and Macau App Stores.

Does Facebook Messenger work in China?

No, Messenger is blocked too. MyChinaGuide says Messenger runs on Meta’s infrastructure and is filtered at the same network level as Facebook. You won’t be able to send or receive messages, make calls, or even see whether your texts were delivered. GreatFire’s test page for www.messenger.com also answers “No”, as of its last test on July 5, 2026.

The same fixes work for Messenger. MyChinaGuide says Messenger works on a roaming eSIM with data roaming on, and Reddit users report it working on Trip.com eSIMs and over a Pixel’s built-in VPN on hotel Wi-Fi (see the reports below). WhatsApp is blocked in China as well, so it won’t help on a Chinese connection either.

Is Facebook available in China?

The app is, but the service isn’t. Facebook and Messenger are listed in Apple’s China App Store, from Meta Platforms. Reuters reported in April 2024 that Facebook, Instagram and Messenger stayed available to download there after Apple removed WhatsApp and Threads on the Chinese government’s orders. Downloading the app doesn’t get you past the block: it still won’t load on a Chinese connection.

Meta itself says it doesn’t offer its services in China. Its 2025 annual report says “several of our products are not generally available in China.” In an April 2025 statement reported by the Associated Press, Meta said Mark Zuckerberg had been public about “our interest in offering our services in China,” but that “we do not operate our services in China today.”

Is Facebook allowed in China?

No. Facebook is blocked on Chinese networks, and Meta doesn’t operate in China. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, said in March 2025 that Meta was “not able to come to agreement in doing the things that would be necessary for us to offer our services in China.” He said that left Meta in “a better position” to defend the values Facebook was founded on, including free expression.

Chinese companies still advertise on Facebook. Meta’s 2025 annual report says it generates meaningful revenue from a small number of resellers serving advertisers based in China.

For visitors, using Facebook in China means using home roaming, a travel eSIM or a VPN, as described above. The UK government notes that VPNs need to be licensed by the Chinese government. Read Is a VPN legal in China? for what that means for travelers.

What is Facebook called in China?

In Chinese, Facebook is called 脸书 (Liǎnshū). The MDBG Chinese dictionary lists 脸书, or 臉書 in traditional characters, as Facebook. The two characters mean “face” (脸) and “book” (书).

There’s no Chinese version of Facebook. Meta says it doesn’t operate its services in China.

Facebook did once release an app in China without its name on it. In August 2017, Facebook confirmed that it had launched a photo-sharing app called Colorful Balloons in China, the Associated Press reported. The app didn’t carry Facebook’s name, and The New York Times reported that it was released through a separate local company, Youge Internet Technology. Whether Colorful Balloons still exists is not confirmed.

Facebook alternatives in China

The main Facebook alternatives in China are WeChat, Weibo and Xiaohongshu (RedNote). MyChinaGuide says all three run on the open Chinese internet with no workaround needed. It suggests installing WeChat before you travel and asking family at home to install it too, because it works worldwide. See WeChat in China for how to sign up as a visitor.

Facebook in China: what Reddit users report

Reddit reports from 2026 say Facebook works on travel eSIMs and home roaming, and on a VPN over hotel Wi-Fi. They’re individual accounts, not tests.

  • Travel eSIMs, June 2026. In r/travelchina, a traveler using the eSIM in question said they had been posting to Instagram and Facebook without any problems. Their location sometimes showed up as Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan. Another user said the same eSIM works with everything but TikTok.
  • Messenger, January 2026. A traveler who had used Trip.com eSIMs several times said they hadn’t found an app they couldn’t use, and that Gmail and Messenger worked fine.
  • Home roaming, February and June 2026. One traveler said Vodafone roaming gave them Facebook, Instagram, Gmail and WeChat during three weeks in China in January. A T-Mobile customer said Facebook and Instagram worked after they added T-Mobile’s international calling package, and another said their T-Mobile plan reached Meta’s apps without it, though it was sometimes slow.
  • VPN on hotel Wi-Fi, October 2026. A Pixel owner said that with the phone’s built-in VPN on hotel Wi-Fi and all SIMs off, they could use Facebook, Messenger, Reddit and ChatGPT.
