Short answer

Beijing airport Wi-Fi is free, and you don't need a Chinese phone number. At Beijing Capital (PEK), join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW, open any webpage, choose Passport Login and take a photo of your passport. A Wi-Fi kiosk can also scan your passport and print a login. Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps won't work on it without a VPN.

  • Beijing Capital's free network is AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW. Join it, then open any webpage to get the login page.
  • Without a Chinese phone number, choose Passport Login and take a photo of your passport. The airport says the SMS code also works with foreign numbers.
  • Wi-Fi kiosks in Terminals 2 and 3 scan your passport and print a username and password.
  • The airport says one login lasts 3 months.
  • Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don't work on the airport Wi-Fi. Use a VPN, or turn Wi-Fi off and use a roaming eSIM.
  • If you use a VPN, finish the Wi-Fi login with the VPN off, then connect it.

Beijing airport Wi-Fi login

To log in at Beijing Capital, join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW, open any webpage and complete the login page that appears. Without a Chinese phone number, use Passport Login or a Wi-Fi kiosk. The airport says the SMS code also works with phone numbers from all countries and regions.

The airport’s Wi-Fi guide says Chinese law requires a real-name login on public Wi-Fi. It lists four ways: an SMS code, Passport Login, a Wi-Fi kiosk and WeChat. Its steps, from the guide’s English captions:

  1. In your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW.
  2. Open any webpage in your browser, such as Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  3. On the login page, use one of the methods below.

Official page, in Chinese: 无线上网指南 (Wi-Fi guide).

Passport Login (no Chinese number needed)

On the login page, choose Passport Login and take a photo of your passport’s photo page. IT Home, a Chinese tech news site, reported in October 2026, citing CCTV News, that the system reads the photo and logs you in.

SMS code

Enter your phone number, tap Get verification code (获得验证码), then enter the code and tap Login (登录). The airport’s Chinese page says SMS login supports phone numbers from all countries and regions.

The code comes by text, so your phone has to receive texts in China. An August 2024 Beijing government guide said SMS login was best for Chinese numbers and suggested the kiosk for foreign numbers. If no code arrives, use Passport Login or a kiosk.

WeChat

If you already use WeChat, the airport’s official WeChat account and mini program can log you in with one tap.

Beijing airport Wi-Fi kiosks

The Wi-Fi kiosks scan your passport and print a username and password for the login page. IT Home reported in October 2026 that the airport has 46 kiosks in different areas of Terminals 2 and 3. They also take Chinese ID cards and travel permits for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan residents.

The Beijing government’s 2024 guide gives these steps:

  1. Find a kiosk. If you can’t, show airport staff this sentence: 请问最近的无线上网身份验证自助终端在哪里? It asks where the nearest Wi-Fi identity check kiosk is.
  2. Open your passport to the photo page and slip it into the slot marked 护照扫码口 Passport Scanning. The kiosk prints a username and password.
  3. On the login page, enter the username where it says 输入账号 (Account number) and the password where it says 输入密码 (Password).
  4. Tap 登录 (Login).

The airport’s Wi-Fi guide doesn’t list where the kiosks are. The Beijing government says staff at the “Beijing Service” counter at the airport will help you connect.

Beijing airport Wi-Fi password

You don’t need a password to join the network. Join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW and log in on the page that opens in your browser. If you use a Wi-Fi kiosk, it prints a username and password. Enter both on the login page.

Time limit and speed

The airport says that once you’ve logged in, you won’t need to log in again for 3 months. It also says the login has no ads and takes about 5 seconds, down from 20. IT Home reported in October 2026 that each passenger gets up to 15 Mbps, enough to stream HD video.

The Beijing government’s 2024 guide said a kiosk login gave five hours online, and one ID could print up to three logins. The airport’s guide doesn’t mention a five-hour limit. Whether it still applies is not confirmed.

Beijing airport Wi-Fi not working

If the login page doesn’t appear, open any webpage in your browser. If you use a VPN, keep it off until you’ve logged in. The steps are in the VPN section below.

Officials gave this advice in IT Home’s October 2026 report:

  • Stay away from crowds. People block and split the Wi-Fi signal.
  • Don’t walk around quickly until the login has finished.
  • If the login fails, you can’t connect or the speed is unusual, ask one of the airport’s service ambassadors for help.

If no SMS code arrives, use Passport Login or a kiosk. Even when the Wi-Fi works, Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps won’t load on it. The next sections explain why and what to do.

Beijing Capital and Daxing airport Wi-Fi

Beijing has two international airports, Capital (PEK) and Daxing. Both have free Wi-Fi with a passport login.

Airport Network Login without a Chinese number
Capital (PEK) AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW Passport Login, a kiosk login, or an SMS code
Daxing BDIA-FREE-WIFI A photo of your passport on the login page

The Daxing details are from a December 2025 Beijing government article. Steps are in our Daxing airport Wi-Fi guide.

What doesn’t work on Beijing airport Wi-Fi

Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don’t work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN. The airport Wi-Fi is a Chinese network, so the usual blocks apply. Airalo says Google (including Gmail and Maps), Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and WhatsApp are generally inaccessible on local networks in China.

A roaming eSIM doesn’t help while your phone is on the Wi-Fi. Airalo says its eSIM gives full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. The same goes for airport Wi-Fi: turn Wi-Fi off to use the eSIM’s data.

Other ways to get online when you land

If the airport Wi-Fi isn’t enough, use a roaming eSIM, a Chinese SIM card or a VPN.

A roaming eSIM

A roaming eSIM gives you mobile data without the airport login. Airalo says its eSIM data is routed through secure gateways outside mainland China, which is why blocked sites work on it. Each provider’s routing is in our China eSIM comparison.

A Chinese SIM card at the airport

You can buy a SIM card at Capital Airport. The airport’s Pocket Wi-Fi and SIM Card page says international and domestic SIM cards are sold at booths around the airport, with service points in Terminals 2 and 3.

The Beijing government said in March 2025 that foreign visitors can get a SIM card at China Unicom’s service hall at Capital Airport. It says you need your passport and visa, and the process takes about 5 minutes. It listed China Unicom (Beijing) plans for 7, 10, 15 or 30 days. Xinhua reported in July 2024 that Beijing Unicom had a service point at exit B on level 2 of Terminal 3.

A Chinese SIM uses a local network, so the same apps stay blocked on it.

A VPN

If you use a VPN, finish the Wi-Fi login with the VPN off, then connect it. NordVPN’s help center calls the login page on public Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes a captive portal. It says auto-connect stops that page from loading, and a kill switch blocks all non-VPN traffic, so the page never appears.

  1. Turn off your VPN’s auto-connect and kill switch, and disconnect the VPN.
  2. Join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI-NEW and complete the login.
  3. If the login page doesn’t appear, open a plain http address such as http://example.com. NordVPN suggests this to bring the page up.
  4. Connect the VPN, then turn the kill switch and auto-connect back on.

Provider-specific fixes are in our guide to using a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi in China.
