Kunming airport Wi-Fi is free, according to travel guides, and the airport says Wi-Fi 6 covers all areas of its terminal. Guides say you join the free network, then log in with a code sent to your phone by text. They disagree on whether the code reaches foreign numbers. The network name is not confirmed. Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps won't work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN.
- The airport says Wi-Fi 6 covers all areas of its terminal. Its website doesn't give the network name or the login steps.
- The network name is not confirmed. Sources give five versions, including AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI, Airport_Free_Wifi and KMG-Free-WiFi.
- Guides say you log in with a code sent to your phone by text. They disagree on whether foreign numbers get the code.
- Trip.com's July 2026 guide says you can also verify with a passport, but doesn't say how. Passport Wi-Fi kiosks at Kunming airport are not confirmed.
- A service center for overseas visitors in the B1 international arrivals hall sells short-term SIM cards on a passport, according to November 2024 news reports.
- Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don't work on the airport Wi-Fi. Use a VPN (connect it after the Wi-Fi login), or turn Wi-Fi off and use a roaming eSIM.
Kunming airport free Wi-Fi login
To use the free Wi-Fi at Kunming airport, join the airport’s free network, open any web page, and log in with a code sent to your phone by text, according to travel guides. The airport’s overview page says all areas of the terminal now have Wi-Fi 6 coverage (各区域现已实现WiFi6网络覆盖). Its website doesn’t name the network or explain the login, so the steps below come from travel guides.
China Airline Travel, a booking site, gives these steps in an undated guide:
- In your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join the airport’s free network. Its name is not confirmed; see the list below.
- Open any web page in your browser to bring up the login page.
- Choose Login via SMS, enter your phone number and tap Get Code.
- Type in the code from the text message and tap Log in.
If the login page doesn’t appear, open a plain http address such as http://example.com. NordVPN’s help center suggests this to bring up a Wi-Fi login page.
East China Trip’s January 2026 guide describes a version that starts with scanning a QR code in WeChat. You then enter your mobile number and the code from the text message.

Which network to join
The network name is not confirmed. The airport’s website doesn’t give it, and sources disagree:
AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI: the name given in December 2012, when the Kunming news site Kunming Information Port (昆明信息港) reported that free Wi-Fi would launch in the terminal on January 1, 2013. China Airline Travel’s undated guide gives the same name.Airport-Free-Wi-Fi: Trip.com’s July 2026 guide on its Singapore site.Airport_Free_Wifi: a January 2026 guide from East China Trip, a tour operator.KMG-Airport-Free-WiFi: a January 2026 guide from Travel Chengdu, a tour operator.KMG-Free-WiFi: InYunnan’s guide, last verified in March 2026.
Join whichever of these you see. If you see none of them, ask at the service center for overseas visitors, described below.
Text code with a foreign number
Whether the text code reaches a foreign number is not confirmed. Travel Chengdu’s January 2026 guide says registration requires a Chinese phone number. InYunnan’s March 2026 guide says a new Chinese SIM works, “or you can sometimes use an international number”.
IT Home reported in October 2026 that Chinese law requires real-name verification the first time anyone connects to public Wi-Fi.
If no code arrives, turn Wi-Fi off and use a roaming eSIM, or buy a Chinese SIM card in the arrivals hall. Both are covered below.
Passport login
Trip.com’s July 2026 guide says you need to verify your identity “with your passport or mobile phone number”. It doesn’t say how the passport login works. Passport-scanning Wi-Fi kiosks at Kunming airport are not confirmed.
If you can’t log in
Ask at the service center for overseas visitors in the B1 international arrivals hall. Yunnan Daily and CAAC News reported that it opened on November 1, 2024, with staff who speak foreign languages. Both reports say it gives help 24 hours a day with payments, phone cards, transport and travel.
You can also call the airport’s 24-hour hotline, +86 871 96566. Official page, in Chinese: Kunming airport basic service commitments (November 2023).
Kunming airport Wi-Fi time limit and speed
One 2026 guide gives a 2-hour limit that you can renew by reconnecting; the airport’s website gives no time limit or speed. Travel Chengdu’s January 2026 guide says you get 2 hours at first and can reconnect. It calls the speed “adequate for browsing, messaging, basic needs”. InYunnan’s guide says the speed is adequate for messaging, “but don’t expect to stream video”.
At the 2013 launch, each user was to get 5 hours free, Kunming Information Port reported in December 2012. Current limits are not confirmed.
What doesn’t work on Kunming airport Wi-Fi
Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don’t work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN. The airport Wi-Fi is a Chinese network, so the usual blocks apply. Airalo says Google (including Gmail and Maps), Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and WhatsApp are generally inaccessible on local networks in China. East China Trip’s airport guide also says Google may require a VPN.
A roaming eSIM doesn’t help while your phone is on the Wi-Fi. Airalo says its eSIM gives full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. The same goes for airport Wi-Fi: turn Wi-Fi off to use the eSIM’s data.

Other ways to get internet at Kunming airport
If the airport Wi-Fi doesn’t work for you, use a roaming eSIM, a Chinese SIM card or a VPN.
A roaming eSIM
A roaming eSIM gives you mobile data without the Wi-Fi login. Airalo says its eSIM data is routed through secure gateways outside mainland China, which is why blocked sites work on it. InYunnan suggests buying an eSIM before your trip. It says eSIMs work as soon as you land but don’t give you a Chinese phone number, which some services require. Each provider’s routing is in our China eSIM comparison.
A Chinese SIM card at the airport
You can buy a short-term SIM card on your passport in the international arrivals hall, according to 2024 news reports and 2026 guides.
- Service center for overseas visitors. Yunnan Daily and CAAC News reported in November 2024 that the center opened on November 1, 2024, in the B1 international arrivals hall. Both say it has a phone card counter where overseas visitors can get a short-term card with a passport or other ID. Yunnan Daily says the card is for calls, internet and apps such as ride-hailing and food delivery during a short stay. China Unicom’s Yunnan branch was one of the partners that set up the center.
- Carrier kiosks. InYunnan’s March 2026 guide says China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom have kiosks in the arrivals hall, just after customs. It says you need your passport, activation takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the kiosks close around 10 to 11 p.m. Things to Do in Kunming’s September 2026 guide says the carrier counters’ hours can be inconsistent. If you land after 10 p.m., it suggests a shop in the city center the next morning.
Whether the service center still sells cards around the clock, and what the cards cost, is not confirmed. A Chinese SIM uses a local network, so the same apps stay blocked on it.
A VPN
If you use a VPN, finish the Wi-Fi login with the VPN off, then connect it. NordVPN’s help center calls the login page on public Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes a captive portal. It says auto-connect stops that page from loading, and a kill switch blocks all non-VPN traffic, so the page never appears.
- Turn off your VPN’s auto-connect and kill switch, and disconnect the VPN.
- Join the airport’s free network and complete the login.
- If the login page doesn’t appear, open a plain http address such as
http://example.com. NordVPN suggests this to bring the page up. - Connect the VPN, then turn the kill switch and auto-connect back on.
InYunnan says to install and set up a VPN before you arrive, because you won’t be able to download one once you’re in China. Provider-specific fixes are in our guide to using a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi in China.
