Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps won't work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN.

Hangzhou airport free Wi-Fi login
To use the free Wi-Fi at Hangzhou airport, join HIA Free WiFi, then log in with a text code, an ID document or a login from a Wi-Fi kiosk. The airport’s website lists these three methods: SMS (短信), ID document (证件) and kiosk (取号机).
- In your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join
HIA Free WiFi. That is how the airport’s English page writes the name. Its Chinese page writesHIA-Free-WiFi, so join whichever version you see. - Wait for the login page to open. If it doesn’t, open a plain http address such as
http://example.comin your browser. NordVPN’s help center suggests this to bring up a Wi-Fi login page. - Log in with a text code, an ID document or a kiosk login, as below.
After your first successful login, you can reconnect for 15 days without logging in again, according to the airport. Time limits per session and speeds are not confirmed.

Text code
A January 2026 guide from East China Trip, a tour operator, describes the text login: enter your mobile number, then verify it with the code sent by SMS. Whether codes reach foreign numbers is not confirmed. If no code arrives, try a kiosk.
ID document
The airport lists an ID document login but doesn’t say how it works or which documents it accepts. Whether it takes a foreign passport is not confirmed.
Hangzhou airport Wi-Fi kiosks
Hangzhou airport has two dedicated Wi-Fi kiosks in T4, in and near the international transfer hall. It also has 43 self-service information terminals with a Wi-Fi login function. The airport’s facilities page gives these locations:
- Two Wi-Fi kiosks in T4. After you leave the plane, follow the signs for 中转至国际、港澳台 (transfer to international, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan flights) to the transfer hall. One kiosk is inside the hall, and the other is in the area just outside it.
- 43 self-service information terminals. These are in the terminal buildings and can also issue Wi-Fi logins (带WiFi取号功能, “with Wi-Fi login function”).
China for Travelers’ August 2026 guide says all international and Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan flights use T4.
East China Trip says the machines generate a temporary login code. The airport doesn’t say which documents the kiosks read, so whether they accept a foreign passport, and the exact steps, are not confirmed. If you can’t get a login, ask at an information counter. The airport lists one next to the arrivals exit on level 2 of T4. Its enquiry line, +86 571 96299, runs 24 hours.
What doesn’t work on Hangzhou airport Wi-Fi
Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don’t work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN. The airport Wi-Fi is a Chinese network, so the usual blocks apply. Airalo says Google (including Gmail and Maps), Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and WhatsApp are generally inaccessible on local networks in China. East China Trip’s guide also notes that sites like Google may need a VPN.
A roaming eSIM doesn’t help while your phone is on the Wi-Fi. Airalo says its eSIM gives full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. The same goes for airport Wi-Fi: turn Wi-Fi off to use the eSIM’s data.

Other ways to get internet at Hangzhou airport
If the airport Wi-Fi isn’t enough, use a roaming eSIM, a Chinese SIM card or a VPN.
A roaming eSIM
A roaming eSIM gives you mobile data without the airport login. Airalo says its eSIM data is routed through secure gateways outside mainland China, which is why blocked sites work on it. China for Travelers suggests buying an eSIM before you fly, so it works as soon as you land. Each provider’s routing is in our China eSIM comparison.
A Chinese SIM card at the airport
The airport’s International Service Center, at the T4 international arrivals exit, handles phone cards (通讯卡办理), according to a July 2025 Zhejiang Daily report. In May 2026, the Zhejiang government listed SIM card services among the services of the airport centers in Hangzhou, Ningbo and Wenzhou. A January 2026 East China Trip guide also puts SIM card sales near the T4 international arrivals exit.
China for Travelers’ August 2026 guide says the arrivals hall no longer has mobile-operator counters, and that travelers report finding none. Which operators sell SIM cards at the center, its hours and its prices are not confirmed. A Chinese SIM uses a local network, so the same apps stay blocked on it.
A VPN
If you use a VPN, finish the Wi-Fi login with the VPN off, then connect it. NordVPN’s help center calls the login page on public Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes a captive portal. It says auto-connect stops that page from loading, and a kill switch blocks all non-VPN traffic, so the page never appears.
- Turn off your VPN’s auto-connect and kill switch, and disconnect the VPN.
- Join
HIA Free WiFiand complete the login. - If the login page doesn’t appear, open a plain http address such as
http://example.com. NordVPN suggests this to bring the page up. - Connect the VPN, then turn the kill switch and auto-connect back on.
Provider-specific fixes are in our guide to using a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi in China.
