Guangzhou Airport Wi-Fi: How Foreigners Log In

Updated Oct 14, 2026 9 sources
Short answer

Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi is free. Join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI, then log in with a code sent by text or with a login from a Wi-Fi kiosk that scans your passport. If a code doesn't reach your foreign number, use a kiosk. Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps won't work on it without a VPN.

  • Guangzhou Baiyun's free network is AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI, according to the airport's website.
  • You log in on the network's login page with a code sent by text or a login from a Wi-Fi kiosk. A July 2023 report named these two methods.
  • The kiosks scan a passport, ID card or boarding pass and give you a Wi-Fi login password, according to China Southern Airlines.
  • China Southern Airlines' Terminal 2 FAQ says each login lasts 5 hours. Then you log in again.
  • Service centers for foreign visitors in the Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 international arrival areas are open 24 hours and sell SIM cards.
  • Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don't work on the airport Wi-Fi. Use a VPN (connect it after the Wi-Fi login), or turn Wi-Fi off and use a roaming eSIM.

Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi login

To log in at Guangzhou Baiyun, join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI, then enter a code sent by text or a login from a Wi-Fi kiosk. The airport’s website gives the network name. A July 2023 report on Sina said that before a partnership with the WiFi Master Key app, the airport offered two ways to log in: a text message and a Wi-Fi kiosk (取号机).

  1. In your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI.
  2. Wait for the login page to open in your browser. If it doesn’t, open a plain http address such as http://example.com. NordVPN’s help center suggests this to bring the page up.
  3. Log in with a text code or a kiosk login, as below.

The airport’s 2016 instructions said the login page came in Chinese and English. Official site: Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

Text code

To log in by text, enter your phone number and tap 获取验证码 (get code). Then enter the code from the text message and tap 登录 (log in). These steps come from the airport’s 2016 instructions. For a foreign number, they said to type 00, then the country code and the number, for example 0044 for a UK number.

Whether the code reaches foreign numbers now is not confirmed. If no code arrives, use a Wi-Fi kiosk.

WeChat and WiFi Master Key

You can also log in with WeChat, according to China Southern Airlines’ FAQ for Terminal 2. The July 2023 report said the airport works with WiFi Master Key (WiFi万能钥匙), a free Wi-Fi app, so its users can connect in one tap.

Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi machine

The Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi machine is a self-service kiosk that scans your passport and gives you a login for the Wi-Fi. China Southern Airlines’ FAQ says the passenger service kiosks in Terminal 2 scan a passport, ID card or boarding pass and give you a Wi-Fi login password.

The airport’s 2016 instructions said it offered the kiosks because international passengers may not be able to use WeChat or text messages.

  1. Find a Wi-Fi kiosk in the terminal. If you can’t, ask staff for the WiFi 取号机 (Wi-Fi number machine).
  2. Scan your passport.
  3. On the Wi-Fi login page, choose the kiosk login and enter the login the kiosk gives you.

China Southern’s FAQ is not dated. Where the kiosks are now, and whether Terminal 3 has them, is not confirmed. The July 2023 report mentions kiosk logins, but only as one of the airport’s two methods before the WiFi Master Key partnership.

Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi time limit and speed

Each login lasts 5 hours, then you log in again. China Southern Airlines’ FAQ for Terminal 2 says this, and the airport’s 2016 instructions said the same.

China Southern says Terminal 2 has 1,300 Wi-Fi hotspots and 1 Gbps of outbound bandwidth. The speed each passenger gets is not confirmed.

What doesn’t work on Guangzhou airport Wi-Fi

Google, WhatsApp and other blocked apps don’t work on the airport Wi-Fi without a VPN. The airport Wi-Fi is a Chinese network, so the usual blocks apply. Airalo says Google (including Gmail and Maps), Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and WhatsApp are generally inaccessible on local networks in China.

A roaming eSIM doesn’t help while your phone is on the Wi-Fi. Airalo says its eSIM gives full access to blocked sites “as long as you are using your eSIM data (and not the hotel Wi-Fi)”. The same goes for airport Wi-Fi: turn Wi-Fi off to use the eSIM’s data.

Other ways to get online when you land

If the airport Wi-Fi isn’t enough, use a roaming eSIM, a Chinese SIM card or a VPN.

A roaming eSIM

A roaming eSIM gives you mobile data without the airport login. Airalo says its eSIM data is routed through secure gateways outside mainland China, which is why blocked sites work on it. Each provider’s routing is in our China eSIM comparison.

A Chinese SIM card at the airport

You can buy a Chinese SIM card at Baiyun’s service centers for foreign visitors. The Guangzhou government said in April 2026 that the centers are in the international arrival areas of Terminals 2 and 3 and are open 24 hours. They offer fast SIM card registration and activation, and staff can help you install messaging, payment and translation apps. More on Alipay for foreigners.

CAAC News (中国民航网) reported in April 2026 that the centers and the airport’s business travel service counters sell China Unicom and China Mobile SIM cards. Plans differ by operator.

Bring your passport. China News Service reported in October 2024, in a story republished by the travel news site Pinchain, that foreign visitors can get a short-term SIM card with a passport or other ID at the international SIM card counter in Terminal 2.

A Chinese SIM uses a local network, so the same apps stay blocked on it.

A VPN

If you use a VPN, finish the Wi-Fi login with the VPN off, then connect it. NordVPN’s help center calls the login page on public Wi-Fi at hotels, airports and cafes a captive portal. It says auto-connect stops that page from loading, and a kill switch blocks all non-VPN traffic, so the page never appears.

  1. Turn off your VPN’s auto-connect and kill switch, and disconnect the VPN.
  2. Join AIRPORT-FREE-WIFI and complete the login.
  3. If the login page doesn’t appear, open a plain http address such as http://example.com. NordVPN suggests this to bring the page up.
  4. Connect the VPN, then turn the kill switch and auto-connect back on.

When your 5-hour login runs out, repeat these steps. Provider-specific fixes are in our guide to using a VPN on hotel Wi-Fi in China.
