Unreliable in mainland China

Does Spotify Work in China?

Spotify works in China only sometimes: on Chinese mobile data and Wi-Fi its website and web player are blocked, but most Reddit reports we found from 2026 say the app still played music without a VPN. Travel guides disagree. Spotify isn't offered in mainland China, so you can't sign up there, and its app isn't in Apple's China App Store. Install the app, log in and download your music at home. A roaming eSIM or a VPN lets you stream when the app won't connect.

Before you fly

  • Install Spotify and log in at home. Spotify's iPhone app isn't in Apple's China App Store, and mainland China isn't on Spotify's list of places where you can sign up.
  • Download your music. On Premium you can download albums, playlists and podcasts, up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to 5 devices. The free version downloads podcasts only.
  • Go online every 30 days. Spotify says you need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep your downloads. On a longer stay, MyChinaGuide suggests opening Spotify once on a roaming eSIM or VPN.
  • Switch on Offline mode in China. It's under Settings and privacy, then Data-saving and offline. Spotify says only your downloads then play.
  • Set up a roaming eSIM or a VPN at home. You'll need one to stream if the app won't connect. MyChinaGuide says VPN websites are blocked inside China.

Is Spotify blocked in China?

Spotify’s website and web player are blocked in mainland China, but the app’s status is less clear. GreatFire, which tests websites from mainland China, gets these results:

  • open.spotify.com, Spotify’s web player: GreatFire answers “No” to whether it opens from mainland China. Its last test was on October 17, 2026.
  • www.spotify.com, Spotify’s website: also “No”. Its last test was on October 17, 2026.
  • spotify.com, without the www: “Sometimes”. GreatFire calls access unreliable. Its last test was on October 18, 2026.

GreatFire rates the spotify.com domain as a whole as mixed. Its tests cover web addresses, and we couldn’t confirm which of them Spotify’s apps connect to.

Travel guides disagree about the app. MyChinaGuide, which makes a China travel app, said in September 2026 that Spotify doesn’t stream in mainland China: on a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi, the app can’t reach its servers because the Great Firewall blocks them. China Survival Kit, which sells a travel toolkit, said the same in December 2025. Holafly, an eSIM seller, said in September 2026 that Spotify’s absence from China is a licensing and business decision, not a Great Firewall block. It says travelers with existing accounts can generally keep listening, though some report playback problems on hotel Wi-Fi or a local SIM.

Because these sources disagree, we list Spotify as unreliable.

Does Spotify work in China? What Reddit users report

Most Reddit reports we found from 2026 say the Spotify app played music in China without a VPN. They’re individual accounts, not tests.

  • In March 2026, someone asked on r/travelchina whether Spotify works in China, after seeing conflicting reports online. One reply said “no need to vpn”. Another said it worked on an eSIM, with the songs also downloaded for offline use. A third said it worked on a Thai SIM card with roaming.
  • In April 2026, a user on r/chinalife said the Spotify app worked on their Android phone without a VPN through a one-week road trip.
  • Also in April 2026, a visitor wrote on r/chinalife that on a trip the previous summer, Snapchat and Spotify were the only Western apps that didn’t need their eSIM.
  • In May 2026, an r/chinalife user answered a question about music apps with “Spotify. Works without VPN.”
  • In July 2026, someone moving to China for four years asked on r/chinalife what to use instead of Spotify, which they understood was banned. One reply said “Spotify is fine. Using it now”.

Not everyone agrees. In December 2025, a user on r/travelchina said they must have a working VPN to use Gmail or Spotify.

Spotify in China: not offered on the mainland

Spotify has never launched in mainland China, according to both Holafly and MyChinaGuide. Spotify’s own list of places where you can sign up includes Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, but not mainland China. Its iPhone app isn’t in Apple’s China App Store. Apple’s Hong Kong store has it.

Spotify’s terms say your account must be in your country of residence, and that you must only use the version of Spotify offered there. The terms were last updated on September 4, 2026.

Holafly says Spotify holds a minority stake in Tencent Music Entertainment, which runs QQ Music, Kugou Music and Kuwo Music. Tencent Music lists a share swap with Spotify among its 2017 milestones.

Spotify Free abroad and the 14-day rule

Spotify’s help page on playing abroad no longer mentions a 14-day limit for free accounts. Until July 2026, Spotify’s “Can’t play abroad” page said you could use a free account for up to 14 days in a country or region other than the one where it’s registered, and that after that you wouldn’t be able to play anything. Spotify rewrote the page at the end of July 2026. The current version, updated on September 2, 2026, says only that your account’s country is based on where you were when you signed up, and that if you’ve moved, you should update your account’s country and payment method.

Travel guides still cite the limit. Holafly said in September 2026 that free accounts only work abroad for 14 days. We couldn’t confirm whether Spotify still applies it.

The free version also can’t download music. Spotify says free users can only download podcasts.

Does Spotify Premium work in China?

Spotify Premium’s downloads work in China, because they play without a connection. Streaming on Premium gets mixed reports: Holafly says travelers with existing Premium accounts can stream, while MyChinaGuide says Spotify doesn’t stream on Chinese networks.

Spotify lists “Travel abroad with your music” among the features of Premium Individual. It doesn’t sell Premium in mainland China, which isn’t on its list of places where you can sign up.

Download your music before you fly

Downloads are the dependable way to listen to Spotify in China. MyChinaGuide calls offline playback the one method that never fails. Spotify’s help center says:

  • On Premium, you can download albums, playlists and podcasts. You can’t download single songs, but you can add them to a playlist and download that.
  • You can download as many as 10,000 tracks on each of up to 5 devices.
  • You need to go online at least once every 30 days to keep your downloads.
  • Downloads play automatically when you lose internet. Offline mode, under Settings and privacy, then Data-saving and offline, makes sure only your downloads play.
  • If you reinstall the app, you need to download everything again.

Spotify downloads over Wi-Fi by default, so do it on your home Wi-Fi before you leave. On a trip longer than 30 days, MyChinaGuide suggests opening Spotify once on a roaming eSIM or VPN to keep your downloads. It also suggests switching on Offline mode when you land, so the app stops searching for servers it can’t reach.

On a roaming eSIM

A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China lets Spotify stream. MyChinaGuide says such an eSIM sends your data out through Hong Kong or Singapore, and that Spotify then streams normally with no VPN. On r/travelchina in March 2026, one traveler said Spotify worked on an eSIM and another said it worked on a Thai SIM card with roaming.

It only covers the eSIM’s mobile data. MyChinaGuide says that on hotel Wi-Fi you’re back behind the firewall. See eSIM or VPN for China to compare the two.

Does Spotify work in China with a VPN?

Yes, when the VPN connects. MyChinaGuide says that with a VPN connected, Spotify behaves as if you were in your home country. It adds that China’s April 2026 crackdown on VPN traffic broke many services, and that VPN websites are blocked inside China, so install one before you leave. China Survival Kit says VPN speeds can make Spotify buffer or skip, and that a dropped VPN connection interrupts the music. Compare options on our VPN page, and see VPN for hotel Wi-Fi in China.

In January 2026, a user on r/chinalife said many services still thought they were in China while they were connected to their VPN, and that trying to update their Spotify plan brought up a “Spotify is not available in your country” message.

Spotify’s user guidelines don’t permit circumventing territorial or other content access restrictions applied by Spotify or its licensors. Neither they nor Spotify’s terms mention VPNs or travel by name. Read Is a VPN legal in China? before you go.

Hong Kong and Macau

Spotify works normally in Hong Kong and Macau. Both are on Spotify’s list of places where you can sign up, and MyChinaGuide says both sit outside the Great Firewall. It suggests refreshing your downloads there before you head to the mainland.

Spotify alternatives in China

QQ Music and NetEase Cloud Music are China’s main music streaming apps, according to MyChinaGuide. Tencent Music Entertainment calls QQ Music, Kugou Music, Kuwo Music and WeSing “the four famous music mobile apps in China”.

  • QQ Music. Run by Tencent Music. Holafly calls it China’s largest music library, with wide coverage of mainstream Western and Asian pop.
  • NetEase Cloud Music. Holafly says it’s popular for indie and electronic music.
  • Kugou Music and Kuwo Music. Both are also run by Tencent Music.
  • Apple Music. Apple lists Apple Music as available in mainland China. MyChinaGuide says it’s one of the few Western entertainment services with an official mainland presence, and that travelers report foreign Apple Music accounts keep streaming there without a VPN. In 2026, Reddit users in China said the same.

The Chinese apps take some setup. Holafly says QQ Music’s and NetEase Cloud Music’s apps are mostly in simplified Chinese, require verification with a local phone number or a WeChat or Alipay login, and may limit some international music to paying VIP members. MyChinaGuide says their Western catalogs are patchy, and that paid tiers generally expect Alipay or WeChat Pay. QQ Music, NetEase Cloud Music and Kugou are in Apple’s China App Store but not in its US store.
