Blocked in mainland China

Does Google Translate Work in China?

No, Google Translate doesn't work in China over local mobile data or Wi-Fi unless you have a VPN: Google withdrew it from the mainland in 2022, and GreatFire's latest check there, in October 2026, found its website blocked. Languages you download before you fly still translate offline. Online features need a roaming eSIM whose data leaves China, or a VPN. Baidu Translate, Microsoft Translator and the iPhone's built-in Translate app work in China without either.

Before you fly

  • Install Google Translate at home. You won't find it in the App Store in mainland China, so update it before you leave too.
  • Download the Chinese language pack over Wi-Fi. Text translation then works with no connection at all.
  • Try the camera in airplane mode. Sources disagree on whether camera translation works offline.
  • Plan a connection for spoken conversations. Google's offline live translation doesn't cover Chinese, so you need roaming data or a VPN for it.
  • Add a backup translation app. Download its Chinese offline pack too.

Does Google Translate work in China without a VPN?

Not online. Google shut the service down on the mainland in 2022, and the UK government names Google as one of the services blocked permanently in China. GreatFire’s tests from inside mainland China answer “Sometimes” to whether translate.google.com opens there, and call access unreliable. GreatFire says the firewall silently drops the site’s traffic. When it last checked, on October 18, 2026, the site failed to load from every one of its mainland test servers.

We list Google Translate as blocked even so. In GreatFire’s record, no test since October 2014 has found the site opening normally: each result has been either blocked or mixed, and every check since August 30, 2026 has found it blocked. Trip.com, which sells eSIMs, wrote in June 2026 that Google Translate no longer needs a VPN in China, without saying what had changed. No other source we found agrees.

China Navigators, a China travel site, said in March 2026 that Google Translate is blocked on Chinese Wi-Fi and needs a VPN or eSIM roaming on Chinese networks. Reddit reports from 2026 say the same. In January, a commenter on r/travelchina said Google services are banned in China, so Google Translate needs a VPN app as well. In April, a foreigner living in China wrote on r/chinalifer that without a VPN there was no Google Translate. In September, a traveler from Croatia wrote on r/chinatravel that Apple’s translator app, unlike Google Translate, wasn’t blocked.

When Google Translate left China

Google pulled Google Translate out of mainland China around the start of October 2022, citing “low usage”. TechCrunch reported on September 30, 2022 that Google had swapped the interface of Translate’s China site for a generic Google Search page. On October 3, AP reported that the website and app had been reduced to a generic search bar plus a link to Google’s Hong Kong page, a site the mainland blocks. AP added that the translation built into the Chrome browser had stopped working for users in China.

The service had been available to mainland users since 2017, VOA reported. For Google’s other services, see Google Search in China.

Does Google Translate work in China offline?

Yes, for languages you download before your trip. Google’s help center says a downloaded language lets you translate without an internet connection, and it tells you to connect to Wi-Fi before downloading. Get the Chinese pack at home, while Google is reachable.

The camera is less certain. Google says camera translations keep working for downloaded languages when you’re offline. China Navigators says Google Translate’s camera mode requires internet, and a user on r/chinalife wrote in June 2026 that Google Lens image translation wouldn’t work offline. The r/chinalifer user said in April that Google Translate and Microsoft Translator often showed offline error messages, though not every time. Test the camera in airplane mode before you fly.

Live conversations need a connection. Google says offline live translate is available only on Pixel 9, 10 and 11 phones, and its list of offline language pairs doesn’t include Chinese. In July 2026, a user on r/travelchina asked for an app like Google Translate’s conversation mode that needs no VPN. A reply suggested the iPhone’s built-in Translate app.

How to use Google Translate in China

Online translation in China depends on a connection that bypasses the firewall, so arrange one before you fly: roaming data or a travel eSIM that exits abroad, or a VPN. The difference between the two is laid out in our guide to eSIMs and VPNs for China.

Google Translate in China with an eSIM

A roaming eSIM works for Google Translate if its data comes out abroad. China Navigators says Google Translate then works without a VPN, because your traffic routes outside China. A T-Mobile customer in Guangdong wrote on r/travelchina in January 2026 that they used Google Translate on roaming data, as long as the phone stayed off Wi-Fi.

Plans differ. A SIM or eSIM made for China’s local networks is usually filtered, according to UNSW’s Salil Kanhere, quoted by the Bega District News in July 2026, and he listed an offline translation app among the apps to install before leaving. Airalo, an eSIM seller, says the unfiltered access lasts only while you use eSIM data, not the hotel Wi-Fi. Our eSIM page shows how each provider routes data.

Google Translate in China with a VPN

A VPN connects Google Translate on any network, including hotel Wi-Fi. China Navigators says it works, though the VPN slows live camera translation. See which VPN works in China now.

The UK government warns that under China’s cybersecurity laws, online products and services, VPNs among them, need a licence from the Chinese government. How that has played out for travelers is covered in our guide to VPN use and the law in China.

Google Translate app in China

Download it before you go: Apple’s App Store in mainland China doesn’t list Google Translate, though the Hong Kong store does. A Google spokesperson told VOA in 2022 that the mobile app had been discontinued in China the year before. Install and update it at home, then download Chinese inside the app.

Google Translate alternatives in China

Baidu Translate and Microsoft Translator are the usual picks: China Navigators says neither needs a VPN on Chinese networks, and Apple’s China App Store carries both. Shanghai’s government also lists WeChat’s built-in translation and the AI chatbots Doubao and DeepSeek. In October 2026, a commenter on r/chinatravel said Doubao translates well on local internet, without a VPN; see AI tools in China.

DeepL in China is another option, though it doesn’t always load on Chinese networks. ChatGPT is blocked there; see ChatGPT in China.

What people in China use instead

Baidu TranslateIn Apple's China App Store. China Navigators recommends its camera mode for menus and signs, and says no VPN is needed because Baidu serves it from inside China. Offline, it handles text only.
Microsoft TranslatorChina Navigators calls it the most complete offline option, with text, voice and camera translation in airplane mode once you download Chinese.
Apple TranslateBuilt into iPhones since iOS 14 and usable offline with downloaded languages, Shanghai's government says. China Navigators adds that on iOS 16 or later, the Camera app can translate Chinese text directly.
WeChatA June 2026 r/chinalife reply suggests sending a photo to yourself in a chat, then long-pressing it to translate the text in the image.
PapagoTwo r/travelchina users in January 2026 preferred its translations to Google's, and one said it translates images offline.

Yes, while the VPN stays connected, on any network. Set it up before you travel, because MyChinaGuide says VPN providers' websites are blocked in China.

Does Google Translate work in China with an eSIM?

Yes, if the eSIM's data comes out outside mainland China, and only while you stay on that mobile data rather than Wi-Fi.

What can I use instead of Google Translate in China?
